the rock star
Leftist is a progressive, multicultural collective formed in 2008 to tell the stories of the disenfranchised through music and visuals driven by a sense of social responsibility. In today’s society, artists and listeners alike typically use media for escapist purposes. The problem is we can only “escape” for so long, before the difficult realities we’ve been running from return like they never left… because they never did. Contrary to the current trend, Leftist inspires in people a breakthrough. Our intent is that the listener interact with our content and decide that they can face their struggles and encourage the people around them to do the same.
Leftist has opened for MGMT at University of Maryland’s Art Attack Festival, moving a crowd of 5,000+ people in the process, and held our own on major platforms such as the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and Reach Festival Main Stage, the DC Funk Parade, and the legendary Howard Theater — a show which we sold out. Through our Brand Ambassadorship with the international humanitarian aid organization, Penny Appeal USA, we not only performed in, but helped organize and curate, The Echoing Change Tour — a national tour featuring the likes of Brother Ali, Tariq Toure, and Moses the Comic, among others — helping to raise thousands of dollars for PAUSA’s humanitarian efforts here in the States. In addition to working on our long awaited album entitled Strength, a followup to The Left Is EP, we are currently collaborating with Bailey’s Community Center in Fairfax, Virginia to bring more youth into local safe spaces.
