While others in the band might have more experience, no one in the group has more right of passage. The Diabate's are a tribe of griots (storytellers/musicians) from his original homeland, Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Griots are charged with documenting and guarding the old oral traditions of history, poetry, and social ettiquette that give the country its sense of tradition and culture. To this extent, Diabate is simply carrying on a birthright that has been passed down to him from generations before.
As one of the originators of the band, Diabate works to ensure the legacy of his tribe and the whole of Africa is imprinted within the Leftist aesthetic. He is influenced by the likes of Bob Marley, Richard Bona, Youssou N'dour, and Toumani Diabate; to name a few and that impact can be heard in Leftist original songs like Coliseum and Strength for the Shaken.
